The only thing I know about diabetes is that there are a few different types and a little something about glucose and treatments and such. But my question is: how does one develop diabetes?

When the food that we eat is not utilized properly due to improper production of insulin, Diabetes develops.
The food that we eat is broken down and converted into glucose (sugar) in the body. Insulin is a hormone that controls the sugar levels in the blood, helps in its utilization and storage by the body. Lack of insulin causes abnormalities in the metabolism or breaking down of carbohydrates, proteins and fats in the body. As a result glucose is not used by the body cells and builds up in the blood causing Diabetes.
Diabetes is quite often developed during pregnancy (known as gestational diabetes.) Or people with other illnesses can be more likely to develop it too.
I've got Cystic Fibrosis and the doctors are always asking me if I've had a diabetes test because I will be more prone to getting it than the average person.
